Diving Java

Java is the seat of the bustling capital city of Jakarta, a frequent stop on the way to destinations further afield, but there is much more to experience on this island.

Yogyakarta is a feast for the senses with the clanging sounds of gamelan orchestras, color and motion of masked dancers and the exotic aromas of open air markets. Here you can experience the creative traditions of intricate batik textiles, hand-cut shadow puppets and filigree silverwork, and perhaps purchase a few pieces to take home.

Hike through calderas and craters for breathtaking views of the steam rising from beautiful Gunung Bromo and the tall peak of Gunung Semeru, which is one of Java’s most active volcanoes.

Investigate a massive Buddhist temple covered in thousands of carved panels illustrating stories from Buddhist texts and scenes of early Javanese life at Borobudur. Attend a performance of the Hindu epic, the Ramayana, with the spires of a 9th Century Hindu temple as a backdrop at Prabanan.
