Pelican Beach South Water Caye

Pelican Beach Resort at South Water Caye, a 15-acre island, is located in the center of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve fourteen miles off the coast of Dangriga. This picturesque tropical island sits atop the Belizean barrier reef which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997. The location makes it convenient for a spontaneous snorkeling adventure into coral gardens twenty yards offshore. With plenty of hammocks and lounge chairs, and short trips easily arranged, this is the perfect place to snorkel, scuba dive, learn about the marine environment, or just relax.

To take advantage of natural sunlight and wind and to avoid noisy generators, the lighting and some refrigeration is provided by a photo voltaic system (solar powered energy). Bathroom facilities are state-of-the-art water saving composting toilets in half baths located in each unit, while private, gravity-fed showers beside each unit are conveniently for easy access when you come from the beach. Sounds rustic? It really isn`t! The facilities have been designed so that you can really relax and enjoy the natural beauty surrounding you. All your needs are taken care so you can avoid making any major decisions—no need to wear makeup, dress up for dinner, carry around your wallet, or even remember when mealtimes are (just listen for the bell!).

The accommodations on the island include a large two-story wooden building that used to be a convent. Today, the building houses the restaurant and five spacious Guest Rooms on the second story. Each room has a wonderful view of the reef, and nice natural air-conditioning with the tropical breezes.

On the southern end of the island there are two wooden cottages, Osprey`s Nest and Heron`s Hideaway. Osprey`s Nest sleeps six people in three bedrooms with one shared bathroom and two large verandas. Heron`s Hideaway is the honeymoon favorite, a very private cottage with one bedroom and eastern veranda with hammocks.

Snorkeling is possible right from the beach, and the PADI dive shop on the island will arrange a variety of snorkeling tours. Scuba diving is the main activity here, and the dive shop offers certification, night dives and scuba gear for rent. Fly fishing is also a popular pastime. Kayaks are available at no charge, and bird watchers are always busy with the wide selection of herons and other wading and shore birds, along with pelicans, ospreys and frigate birds.
