OVERVIEW Namibia is a large country dominated by deserts, Namib along its coastline, and Kalahari in the interior. This area is fast becoming a favorite safari destination, and no wonder since it has so much to offer! Enjoy small intimate safari camps, colorful and rich cultures, and gorgeous scenery that varies from enormous dunes to arid and vast reserves with plenty of wildlife.
Namibia is a country of contrasts between two vast deserts, the Namib and the Kalahari. It is a large country with over 800,000 square kilometers, about half of the size of Alaska, yet it only has 1.7 million inhabitants. There is a great deal of open space and many wonderful wildlife reserves. Germany, Great Britain and more recently, South Africa, have all governed Namibia or parts of it at various stages in the country`s history. Independence finally came in 1990, and Namibia became the first country in the world to incorporate the protection of environment in its constitution. The many local cultures have blended with colonial traditions and today Namibia is a mixture of customs, architecture and languages. Most Namibians are Christians, and while English is the official language, Afrikaans is the common language spoken.
The otherworldly beauty of Namib dunes at sunset, the elephants and giraffes at Etosha salt pans, and the multicolored ethnic clothing of the Herero tribe are all unique experiences that only Namibia can offer. This is a place that photographers dream about! Climate is hot and arid year around, with sparse and erratic rainfall at times. Namibia`s capital Windhoek is a vibrant city well worth a visit only two hour`s flight from Capetown, South Africa. Okavango in Botswana and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe are natural extensions to a Namibia experience. |
