Sailfish of Isla Mujeres with Big Animals |
|
Join wildlife photographer Amos Nachoum stalking feeding sailfish.
On this expedition, you’ll have a front-row seat for one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena in all the oceans of the world. Big Animals Expeditions has kept a commitment to providing divers with the closest and wildest access to the sailfish show: up to 100 sailfish working together to corral their prey into bait balls, and then making the bait ball disappear, one sardine at a time. With only 4 guests per departure, you’ll be assured of always getting the best conditions possible for taking your own award-winning wildlife photography.
With a base on Isla Mujeres, you will depart each morning on a customized sport fishing vessel. Providing weather conditions are safe, you will race out anywhere between 10-30 miles offshore looking for frigatebirds hovering over the water. While on the search, suit up in your snorkeling gear and get your cameras ready. The skipper will maneuver the vessel to give us the best position according to his estimated movement of the bait ball. |
|
The frigatebirds feed on the sardines from above, pushing the sardines down, which makes for a tighter and tighter bait ball, and the sailfish swing into action at speeds which will astound you. Now you’ll see what that bill is for — the sailfish use it like a club to stun the sardines so they can pick them off one by one. The whole thing happens very fast, and you’re right in the middle of an exhilarating, whirling cacophony of sights and sounds and sensation.
